Catalog Hover Image extension will provide you with a way to show an alternative image for a product on category pages. A store administrator can upload an image for a product and mark it as its "hover" image. A customer will see this product image by mouseover action on the product on category pages.
The extension is implemented in the most efficient way. Additional images are loaded after the page is rendered so no effect on page speed loading. The Catalog Hover Image extension doesn't use theme templates which makes it compatible with almost any custom theme.
