What Is WebP?

WebP is a modern image format supporting both lossy and lossless compression. It is developed and advocated by Google.  Thanks to its advanced compression algorithm it allows much smaller file sizes compared to .jpg or .png image files.

How Much Can File Size Be Reduced With WebP?

It is possible to reduce the image size by more than 75% with almost the same image quality.  See the links at the bottom of this page for comparison regarding file size and quality when applying WebP to Magento Luma demo product images.  Of course, the reduction in file size that can be achieved depends on your current images as well as your demands regarding image quality.  With our extension, it is easy to test and find the most suitable compression level with the perfect balance between image size and quality for your needs by using the integrated WebP conversion test tool.

Automated Conversion

No worries, for using WebP in your store with our extension, there is no need to create or upload new images.  Once set up, configured and enabled, the extension will handle everything by itself automatically.  For you as a store owner that means: Minimum efforts for maximum benefits!

Browser Support

About 80% of all Internet users use a WebP capable browser and benefit directly from your optimized product images.  But no worries, of course also the remaining customers can use your site without any limitation or disadvantage by seeing your current .jpg images. Of course, this also completely automatic and full-page cache compatible.  See the links at the bottom of this page for more info.

Supported Conversion Tools

Our extension supports 3 different conversion tools:

  • GD
  • cwebp
  • Imagemagick
