OverviewBack to top
Cloverly is an API for carbon offsets that built the web’s first Sustainability as a Service platform. Over the past decade, the desire for calculating one's carbon footprint and offsetting that impact has increased, but it is still difficult to do. There has not been a reliable service to bring offsets to the digital economy.
Our plugin for Magento allows you to calculate the carbon emissions of shipments from your e-commerce store, and give your customers the ability to purchase a carbon offset at checkout. When the plugin is activated, and a customer reaches your checkout page, our API calculates the cost to offset their shipping. We use variables from their order such as shipping zip code, shipping method, and package weight to make this calculation. Your customer is presented with a checkbox offering the carbon neutral option and additional cost. If they select to add this option to their order, Cloverly will perform the carbon offset using wind or solar energy. For example, if you’re shipping a 5-pound package to a customer in Kansas City, and the customer elects to pay for carbon neutral shipping, we’ll purchase renewable energy certificates from a wind farm in Kansas to perform the offset. Simply put, we give your customers the choice of green shipping.
Account & Pricing
To use the free Cloverly plugin, you’ll need to create an account at www.cloverly.com. Once you’ve created an account, you’ll receive an API key that can be added to the plugin settings. Cloverly uses a credit system, similar to Twilio. You can purchase credits in advance which are drawn down as the service is used.
There is no cost to you to use the Cloverly service. Our plugin for Magento passes all fees to the customer via a checkbox at checkout. If a customer elects to purchase the offset, that money will be remitted to you along with your funds collected from the rest of your customer's order.
Your pre-purchased credits in the Cloverly system will be drawn down at the same rate you are collecting funds, making our service free to use for your company.
The final cost to customers includes Cloverly's 25 cent fee, plus the price of the renewable energy purchased for the offset. You can read more about our pricing at www.cloverly.com.
What Makes Cloverly Unique?
For every order, we’ll collect information about the package and corresponding shipping details to produce a quote letting your customer know the correct price for offsetting the shipping amount. Our team comes from both the startup technology and energy industries and understands how to calculate carbon impacts from e-commerce shipments.
Offsets Using Renewable Energy Certificates
Cloverly uses Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from wind and solar facilities to perform carbon offsets. RECs represent the environmental attributes of the production of 1000kWh of renewable energy. Here’s a great video (we didn’t make it!) that explains how RECs work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opJMrzNauFQ
