Overview

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) was released in October 2020 to provide more profound and advanced web analysis to businesses. Google calls it the 'future of measurement'. The advanced web analytics tool is designed for the future, which collects both web and app data, supports direct integration to media platforms, and follows event-based tracking. It comes with advanced features and functionalities that help eCommerce websites gather more insightful data, which track every step of the customer's journey. Ascure has made the Google Analytics 4 integration with Magento easier with the Google Analytics 4 (GA4) Using GTM for Magento 2 extension.

An obvious reason for the Magento 2 store owners to upgrade to the GA 4 is the discontinuation of Google Analytics Universal property by Google. According to the official announcement, the Google Analytics Universal property will stop processing data from July 1, 2023, onwards. Take a big leap by upgrading to the most advanced version of the web analytics tool by Google and discover more meaningful insights about your online store. Google Analytics 4 (GA 4) Using GTM for Magento 2 extension makes the integration easier with the built-in eCommerce events.

Our Google Analytics 4 for Magento 2 extension connects the stores with GA 4 property using the Google Tag Manager. The store admin just needs to fill in the basic details, configure the extension, and enter the API details to generate the JSON file, which can be used to import the tag information into the GTM.

The extension comes with built-in essential eCommerce events so that the store owners are not required to create and tag each event manually. Store owners can easily configure the settings from the backend to create the GTM JSON file with the pre-defined eCommerce events.

Features

  • The admin can enable or disable the GA4 extension from the backend.
  • In order to install Google Tag Manager in Magento 2, the admin needs to copy the <head> & <body> from the GTM account and paste them into the respective fields in the backend.
  • The admin can choose the product identifier variable from the backend.
  • The admin can enable tracking of the product brands and product variants in GA4.
  • In the case of custom success pages, the admin can enter multiple custom success page paths for tracking order success in GA4.
  • The admin can easily configure the GTM API by entering the Account ID, Container ID, and Measurement ID in the backend.
  • Once the extension is configured properly, the admin can export all the tags to a JSON file by entering the GTM Public ID in the backend.
  • The admin can import the generated JSON file into the Google Tag Manager account and set up all the tags for Magento 2 events and triggers.
  • After the final submission of the imported GTM tags, the Google Analytics 4 is successfully set up with Magento 2.

Note: The Google Analytics 4 may take up to 24 hours to track all the data and display reports.

How Does the Extension Work?

The admin needs to enable the extension from the backend, enter the JS and non-JS code, select the product identifier, and enable or disable the product brand and variant from the configuration. The admin can also choose to include or exclude the tax, shipping, and shipping with tax from the transaction, enter custom success page paths, choose to exclude orders with zero value, measure product clicks, and choose from parent and child products for tracking in the Google Analytics 4.

The admin needs to configure the Google Tag Manager API by entering the account ID and container ID in the extensions' respective fields and connect the Google Analytics 4 by entering the measurement ID. Once everything is configured, the admin needs to enter the GTM public ID and export the JSON file containing the tags, events, and triggers. The admin needs to import the JSON file into the GTM account and submit the tags to set up Google Analytics with Magento 2 store.

The admin can also preview the uploaded GTM tags before final submission. Once the tags are submitted, Google Analytics 4 starts tracking the Magento 2 data. It may take up to 24 for the GA4 to come into a fully operational mode.

Supported eCommerce Tracking Events

Magento 2 Google Analytics 4 (GA4) extension makes it easy for the admins to track important eCommerce events in the store. The extension facilitates tracking the following events in Magento 2 through GA4:

Event ------------------------------- Triggers when

add_to_cart --------------- a user adds items to cart

begin_checkout --------------- a user begins checkout

purchase --------------- a user completes a purchase

remove_from_cart --------------- a user removes items from a cart

Security Features:

As Google Analytics 4 is a third party analysis tool that collects both website and app data to better understand the customer journey, it captures the customers' payment and credit card information while recording the website data. Our extension simply integrates the tool with Magento 2 and doesn't store any payment information and credit card data from the website. The whole process uses script to communicate payment data with the Google Analytics 4, it assures card and payment data security.
